Red Light Therapy FAQs
A little light. A little recovery. A little time for yourself.
Whether you're looking to support muscle recovery, improve your skin's appearance, or simply make more time for yourself, red light therapy is an easy addition to your wellness routine.
Here are answers to some of our most common questions.
What is red light therapy?
Red light therapy, also called photobiomodulation, uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to interact with your body's cells.
Unlike UV light from the sun or tanning beds, red light therapy doesn't rely on ultraviolet radiation. Instead, it uses targeted light wavelengths that are being studied for their effects on cellular activity, skin health, and tissue recovery. It's non-invasive, requires no downtime, and can easily fit into your regular wellness routine.
What are the benefits of red light therapy?
Research suggests red and near-infrared light therapy may support:
- Skin health: Supporting collagen production and helping improve the appearance of fine lines, texture, and overall skin quality.
- Muscle recovery: Helping reduce exercise-related soreness and supporting recovery after physical activity.
- Joint comfort: Potentially helping manage certain types of discomfort and stiffness.
- Cellular function: Supporting biological processes involved in cellular energy production.
- Overall wellness: Creating a simple opportunity to slow down, recover, and make self-care a consistent habit.
Benefits vary by individual, and research is stronger for some applications than others.
What makes The Studio's red light therapy different?
Not all red light devices are created equal.
Our professional-grade panel uses 280 high-output LEDs and six targeted wavelengths to deliver both visible red light and near-infrared light.
The wavelengths are:
- 630 and 660 nm: Visible red light, commonly studied for skin health and collagen-related benefits.
- 810, 830, and 850 nm: Near-infrared light, studied for deeper tissue applications and muscle recovery.
- 1060 nm: An additional near-infrared wavelength being investigated for cellular and tissue effects.
Different wavelengths interact with tissue differently, allowing us to offer an experience designed for more than just the skin's surface.
What's the difference between red light and near-infrared light?
Red light is visible to the human eye and generally acts closer to the surface of the skin. It's commonly used in research involving skin appearance and collagen production. Near-infrared light is mostly invisible and can penetrate farther into tissue, making it a focus of research on muscle recovery, joint comfort, and deeper tissue processes. Our panel offers both.
How long is a red light therapy session?
At The Studio, appointments are scheduled in 20-minute windows.
Your actual light exposure may be shorter depending on the area you're targeting, your distance from the panel, and your individual goals.
More light isn't always better. We'll help you follow appropriate exposure guidelines so you can get the most out of your session.
How often should I use red light therapy?
Consistency matters more than trying to do everything in one session.
For many people, 3–5 sessions per week is a reasonable routine. Some people may choose daily sessions depending on their goals and tolerance.
Our Unlimited Red Light Membership allows you to visit up to once per day.
How long does it take to notice results?
That depends on what you're hoping to achieve.
Some people report feeling more comfortable after recovery-focused sessions, while visible skin changes may require several weeks or longer of consistent use. Results aren't guaranteed, and red light therapy works best when viewed as part of an overall wellness routine rather than a quick fix.
Does red light therapy hurt?
No. Red light therapy is generally painless and non-invasive.
You may notice mild warmth from the panel, but your session shouldn't feel uncomfortably hot.
There's no recovery period, so you can return to your normal activities afterward.
Will red light therapy tan or burn my skin?
Red light therapy isn't tanning. Our panel does not use UVA or UVB wavelengths, so it won't give you a suntan like sunlight or a tanning bed.
Do I need to wear protective eyewear?
We recommend protective eyewear, especially when treating your face or if you're sensitive to bright light.
Avoid looking directly into the illuminated LEDs. Our team can help you get comfortable and positioned properly.
Do I need to remove my makeup or skincare products?
For the best light exposure, we recommend starting with clean, bare skin.
Makeup, heavy lotions, and some skincare products may interfere with how light reaches the skin. If you're using products that increase light sensitivity, check with your healthcare professional before your session.
What should I wear?
Wear whatever makes you comfortable and allows the light to reach the area you're focusing on. Red and near-infrared light need to reach exposed skin, so clothing covering the treatment area can reduce exposure.
Can I use red light therapy before or after the sauna or cold plunge?
Absolutely. Red light therapy can be a convenient addition to your existing Studio routine. There isn't one scientifically established perfect order for everyone. The best sequence depends on your preferences and recovery goals. Whether you're warming up, winding down, or building a regular recovery routine, our team can help you plan your visit.
